Description Mapleton Farm was formerly named 'The Grange' on earlier historic Ordnance Survey maps of this area. The name would suggest that the farm is located on the site of a former medieval grange. The farm was depicted on the earlier maps with an L-shaped pond, possible representing the remains of a former moat. {1}{2} The area of the farm has been levelled, with many of the nearby ponds having been filled in. {3}{4} The grange is thought to have been a possesion of the nuns at Stixwould Priory, being farmed from the 12th century. {5}{6} Sources/Archives SLI9454  Map: Ordnance Survey. 1883-1888. 6 Inch County Series Map - First Edition. 1:10560. Moat House & Moat (demolished)

The remains of the Moat House now form a smallholding yard

and the moat no longer exists. Indeed, this moat and the other moat in Horsington village, south of the church, have been described as 'pits' or 'earthworks' and may have been formed in the extraction of clay or gravel during medieval times. No record of a significant building that would have been surrounded by such a moat complex has been identified. The moat house site is to the north of Mapleton Farm (former Medieval Grange) and is sometimes, wrongly,  suggested as being part of it (see 'Monument Record' above).
